Giuseppe Marconi came from the Apennines, mountains that stand between Florence and Bologna in Italy. As a young man he moved to Bologna where in 1855 he married a local girl, who died a year later giving birth to their son.

Giuseppe, a widower with an infant son, was joined by his father, who bought the Villa Griffone at Pontecchio, eleven miles out of Bologna. His father raised silk worms whilst Giuseppe managed the land. It was in Bologna that Giuseppe met the young Annie Jameson and fell in love. He was seventeen years older than Annie, a widower and an Italian, so the Jameson family did not allow their engagement. However, they were married in France in April 1864 after Annie came of age. One year after their marriage Alfonso was born and nine years later Guglielmo.

"Reading backwards, I can see which characteristics my father inherited from each of his utterly different parents. From his father, that independence of spirit which is the mark of mountain men, the aloneness that is often dour, the ability to make do with what is available, and the fortitude."

The young Marconi often ran foul of his father who was strict with his children and Giuseppe was frustrated by the way Guglielmo seemed to waste away the hours in the attic. Once, in return for the money Guglielmo requested to fund his experiments Giuseppe demanded a demonstration, and from then on his father was a great supporter of his youngest son. Letters show how the two regularly corresponded and how Giuseppe offered guidance and business advice. In 1903, during a public homecoming to welcome Marconi, Giuseppe rode through the streets of Rome in a royal coach beaming with pride with his wife and son. This trip was a huge effort for the old man and on 28 March 1904 he died and was buried in the family vault in Bologna.
